Good Monday morning, WABBLES! After a sunny and calm weekend, spring is wasting no time ramping things back up. WABBLES is in a Slight Risk (2/5) for severe weather for Monday and Tuesday, as back-to-back storm systems make their way into Kentucky. Let’s go ahead and dive into the details of this week!

Today’s Forecast

Morning temperatures start in the mid to upper 50s, but southwest winds quickly boost temperatures into the upper 70s and low 80s this afternoon. Despite some cloud cover and light showers this afternoon, these gusty winds bring back our typical spring air into WABBLES.

Our first chance at strong storms arrives this evening as a strong low-pressure system over the Great Lakes drags a cold front toward the region. This cold front will ignite messy storms across Missouri and Illinois this afternoon, which are expected to eventually congeal and move into the WABBLES region tonight.

With strong winds keeping ample moisture in place, storms will still have some energy heading even after sunset. While all hazards are possible, our largest threat will be severe winds and heavy downpours as the system becomes more linear.

Storms are expected to arrive around 8 pm tonight, with activity tapering off around 4 am Tuesday. The timing and strength of these storms depend on how much instability is left this evening.

Active Pattern Continues

By Tuesday, the skies will be calm for the time being. Winds quickly shift back to a southerly flow, helping temperatures warm into the upper 70s to low 80s.

However, an upper-level disturbance to our southwest will spark a second round of active weather. A new low-pressure system develops on Tuesday, bringing another Slight Risk (2/5) for severe weather. Showers and storms are expected to develop ahead of this system, taking advantage of the increased moisture in WABBLES.

Unlike Monday’s system, this is expected to have a messier setup with widespread showers and storms on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The good news, though, is that these widespread showers could finally help alleviate our severe drought conditions across WABBLES.

Showers move out throughout Wednesday morning, making way for clearing skies. Breezy northly winds behind this system will bring cool temperatures, keeping afternoon highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Wednesday night temperatures cool even more with lows in the upper 40s!

By Thursday, high pressure is in place, keeping things calm, cool, and dry. Temperatures remain cool with highs in the mid-60s, a relieving break after an active week!
