Good Monday morning, WABBLES! After several weeks of active weather, we’ve got a brief break lined up as we head into mid-January. Though we won’t see a lapse in those bone-chilling temperatures, we’re finally loading up a few days of clear skies and sunshine after going so long without! Between freezing rain, sleet, and snow, we’ve had a rather busy winter here in South-Central Kentucky so far, and while we are expecting that busyness to continue to close out the month, it’s pretty nice to get a break every once in a while. We’ll go through everything you need to know about this brief lapse in our active pattern here in today’s forecast blog!
Today’s Forecast
We’re kicking off the work week with partly cloudy skies and high temperatures just barely hovering around the freezing mark here in WABBLES. Expect to feel a light west wind if you’re heading out to work or taking care of some errands; most of the cloud cover will decrease throughout the day, so we’ll have clearer skies once the sun goes down this evening, along with low temperatures in the mid-teens. It’s gonna be cold out, that’s for sure!
How Long Does Our Break Last?
Most of this week, actually! We’ll be lucky for the next several days, as a dome of high pressure is expected to sit right on top of the state of Kentucky through late Friday of this week, serving as a kind of force field to keep any inclement weather out of the region. It’ll extend our break from all the activity all the way out into the early weekend, when we expect to see another wave of precipitation move into WABBLES; except this time, we’re hoping it’ll all stay rain.
The great thing about this particular system is that we’re planning on being much warmer when it pushes through. We’ve got a full week to recover some higher temperatures, and when our area of high pressure erodes, we’re expecting that to happen right here in WABBLES! High temperatures will go from the low-30s to the upper-40s, which if validated will make sure that this passing storm will stay mostly rain.
However, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, there is some snow possible on the backside of this system! That’s due to the second wave of seriously frigid air we’re expecting to dive down from Canada here in a little while, which will return those arctic-like temperatures to WABBLES pretty quickly. While it’s too soon now to tell if we’ll see that cold air give us a good chance at seeing a brief shot of snow to chase that system out, it’s possible that we could see a flash freeze with a lot of the wet rainfall still on the ground, so keep that in mind as we head into the weekend!
Pretty much everyone will be below average temperature-wise as we head into the last week or so of January, and when paired with an active upper-air pattern… well, let’s just say we’ll be keeping our eye out for any more wintery systems as we leave our break and go into February (wink-wink!). But for now, we’re keeping quite calm, which- after the last stretch of weather we’ve had- is a bit of a relief!
That’s about all we’ve got for you today, WABBLES! Make sure to keep warm this week, even though we aren’t expecting any big-time weather. These cold winter temperatures are no joke, so despite our break, make sure you’re taking them seriously! Stay bundled up, and make sure to check out our Twitter page if you haven’t already. We’ll have another blog out later this week to cover the weekend rainy system, so check back here for updates on that as well!
Take care, y’all, and we’ll see you later!
