Good Monday morning, WABBLES, and Happy New Year! 2025 is fast approaching, and we’re preparing for a significant weather pattern change after rain showers close out our December. Prepare for temperatures to plummet this week to kick off January, because once our wet weather has moved out of the region, we expect some truly polar air to push in from the northwest! This polar air will stay in place for a while, lining us up for some potential winter weather as we head into the middle of January. There’s lots of big changes to cover as we step into 2025, and we’re going through all of it in today’s weather blog!

Today’s Forecast

Savor today’s high temperatures in the upper 50s, folks, because it’s the last time you’re going to see them this high for the foreseeable future! We’re partly sunny to kick off the final week of December, with cloud cover increasing overnight tonight before we can expect to see some scattered showers move in early Tuesday morning.

A mature low pressure system off to our west will move in after midnight, bringing with it some precipitation as it spins away to our north, but the main event won’t be the rain we see alongside it; it’ll be the COLD! Temperatures will plummet on New Year’s Day after the low pressure system exits our region, with highs in the upper-30s and low-40s, while low temperatures will keep things frigid in the low-to-mid 20s through the end of the week.

Because we’re expecting to see more of the showery activity to the south of the system as opposed to the stronger, heavier precipitation that our northern neighbors may expect, most WABBLES folks can plan to see anywhere from a twentieth to two-tenths of an inch of rainfall before we step into the New Year. Nothing crazy, but some locations may see more rain than others due to the scattered nature of the showers as they drift through our area and then off to the east early Wednesday morning!

No Rain Showers to start January?

We believe so! The precipitating system discussed above is expected to push out of our WABBLES area by shortly after midnight on Wednesday the 1st, so it’s likely by the time the sun comes up on our first day of January that folks will be drying out. However, though we’ll be dry, that cold air I mentioned before will be hot on that system’s heels, making it very easy for temperatures to drop significantly as we go into the end of the week.

Gone will be the days of high temperatures nearing 60 degrees when a strong polar air mass pushes in during the day on Wednesday! Despite the cold air, however, for several days it will just be that: just cold air. We’re expecting sunshine with little to no cloud cover through Friday as high pressure moves in alongside the chillier temps, which will keep us from seeing any kind of wintery precipitation… for now. Because even though we can’t exactly tell you when our next big winter system may be, we can say that our long-range weather models are definitely toying with the idea of some of us WABBLES folks seeing accumulating snowfall before January is up.
