Good Monday morning, WABBLES! Flurries are on the menu today as the month of December rings in across the region, successfully kicking off finals week at WKU. With some seriously bitter cold lined up for our Monday, it’s no surprise that we’re finally starting to see winter weather back on our radar once more! So dig out those warm winter coats and track down those mittens, because you’re going to need them as we head into the holiday season. We’re going through it all in today’s weather blog!
Today’s Forecast
A pretty strong blast of arctic air made its way into WABBLES overnight, knocking our temperatures significantly below freezing and setting us up for both an extraordinarily chilly Monday and possible winter precipitation later this afternoon. Temperatures will rise out of the mid-20s this morning to a high near the mid-30s this afternoon, likely at or just above freezing by around 3:00 PM.
Because we’ll hover around the freezing mark so closely today, the weak clipper system that we’re expecting to drift in around lunchtime will likely not be able to produce any significant accumulating snowfall; however, some locations across WABBLES may see anywhere from a dusting of snow to two-tenths of an inch of accumulation on grass and some roadways through 5:00 PM, which could make conditions slick later this evening as temperatures drop back below freezing.
While pockets of freezing rain and sleet may be included within the system of flurries we’re expecting to see today, temperatures will dip down below freezing once again tonight, which will ensure that any precipitation, snow or sleet, will be refreezing overnight. So remember that as you get up on Tuesday morning and take it a bit slow on the roads just in case!
Any Other Flurries in the Forecast?
Unfortunately, not for the rest of this week! While we can’t speak very much to the extended forecast, temperatures will be back on the rise starting Tuesday, and with high temperatures in the mid-40s instead of mid-30s it’s a lot harder to see wintery precipitation. Our flurries will likely be confined to this afternoon and evening only until our next big cold frontal system moves in, though we don’t exactly know when that’ll be. However, the Climate Prediction Center is convinced we’ll continue to see temperatures slightly below average over the next six to ten days across the region, so nothing is impossible!
Otherwise, we’re in for a pretty standard winter week ahead as December kicks off here in Southern Kentucky! As long as you’re bundling up and preparing for the cold temperatures and possible flurries accordingly, you’ll do just fine. In the meantime, make sure you’re keeping up with us here and also on our Twitter page, where we do our best to put out frequent updates on the latest WABBLES weather forecast as we go throughout the week! If anything changes, you’ll be the first to know, so long as you stay tuned to the blog and our social media.
With that being said, we hope all our hardworking students at WKU have a smooth and successful finals week, and the rest of our lovely WABBLES residents have an excellent start to the month! Take care out there, y’all, and we’ll see you back here soon!
