Active Weather Pattern Continues Into the Weekend

Good Wednesday morning, folks, and thank you for visiting wxornotBG! It has been a soggy start to the week across the Commonwealth. With yesterday’s rainfall measurement of 0.48 inches, we have now recorded at least a trace of rainfall everyday since last Friday (May 15). However, our rainfall total for May so far is only 2.02 inches, which is about 1.3 inches below normal for the May 1-20 timeframe. We may get closer to our normal rainfall amount as an active weather pattern continues into the weekend.

Low Pressure Sitting Overhead

Low pressure has slowly been moving across the Ohio River Valley, and will still be bringing active weather to our area. The image below shows satellite imagery of mid-level atmospheric water vapor, which shows the counterclockwise circulation of the low pressure over IL, MO, IN, and KY.

Satellite imagery of this low pressure is eye candy for weather enthusiasts.

This low pressure system is stuck overhead, and it will continue to bring active weather to WABBLES.

This low pressure will bring another round of shower chances, and possibly even a few thunderstorms by the afternoon hours. However, the good news is that any thunderstorms that do develop should remain non-severe.

Our temperatures for today will be a bit below normal, with a forecast high of 70ºF. A factor helping to keep our temperatures cool is the wind. Our winds are out of the northeast today, and should be 5-10 mph throughout the day. Cloudy skies will also help keep us cooler.

More Shower Chances for Thursday

The low pressure will still be around for tomorrow. The animation below shows the model guidance over the next few days as the low spins like a carousel over our heads. This is easily visible by the “bullseye” directly over Kentucky.

With the low staying over our heads for Thursday means that it will bring another round of rain chances. Greatest chance for showers will be after lunchtime.

Our winds will be much lighter tomorrow, and out of the east. However, we should remain mostly cloudy throughout the day. Expect our high temperature to reach near 73ºF. Normal high temperatures for Bowling Green during mid-late May is near 80ºF.

Not Much Change for Friday

Friday should be the last day that this relentless low pressure center spins over Kentucky. But there is a little more hope of seeing some peaks of sun on Friday. GFS model guidance thinks we will start off Friday with clear skies, but there is some disagreements from other models, so confidence remains low. However, we could see another round of light showers on Friday, especially in the afternoon and evening hours.

Our temperatures will return to normal to end the week as well. Winds out of the south will help raise our temperatures to around 78ºF, which is very close to normal.

That wraps up today’s forecast. Hope you have a great Wednesday! Make sure to look for the Afternoon Video Update on Facebook and the Afternoon Weather Story on Twitter, only at @wxornotBG.

One More Thing…

After almost two years of contributing to wxornotBG by writing the Wednesday blog, sadly this is my final post. I graduated from WKU with my meteorology degree last weekend, and now look forward to beginning my new journey as a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

While I am moving on to start my career, Landon and the rest of the team will continue to work hard everyday to bring you the latest information to keep you weather-aware and safe. It has been a privilege to serve Bowling Green and the surrounding areas, and thank you very much for reading our blog and continuously supporting wxornotBG!
